The Great | 2020 Hulu Series

The Great has this energetic, vibrant and odd quality, that at times can be overwhelming due to the immense saturation of comedy, colour, and performances. This is not for everyone, but if you liked 2018's The Favourite this show is for you. It's thoroughly amusing from episode one to the adrenaline rush of episode ten.

The Great is an irresistible contemporary satire, that's both compelling and comedic.

The Great follows the rise of the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia's history, Catherine the Great. After her marriage to Peter the third, the series follows her plot to assassinate her lunatic and depraved husband.

The series is not meant to be a history lesson, evidently highlighted by the title card "an occasionally true story." This sets the tone for each episode and the obscurity that follows. The writing can raise a few brows with the vulgar and explicit comedy, however, thoroughly enteratining due to the overdramatized scenarios. The production design is absolutely breathtaking. It's both historically appropriate however, the colour palette is very contemporary and vibrant. This is complemented perfectly with the cinematography and various wide framing, the show looks like a visual art piece from the 1800's.

The grand set design and wardrobe are echoed through the over the top performances from Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. This might be my favourite role from both. The comedy is sharp and delightfully odd. It's a true satire with well-timed serious moments.

If you're looking for something fresh and new, this original take on Catherine the Great, is certainly worth the watch. It's extremely compelling and irresistibly funny in the most charming way. It's a historical series but the energy is quite contemporary. If you like punchy, quick-witted humour, you'll enjoy this series.
